Advice from the Expert: When is the Best Time to Buy a New Air Conditioner/Heater?

Reality check … If your AC goes out in during our sweltering Arizona Summer, the best time to get a new one is immediately.

The rest of the year when it isn’t an emergency, here are a few things to consider:

1. If the repair costs $2,000 or more, use that money for a down payment on a new AC/heater.
   It’s financially unwise to make repairs to an existing AC/heater if the cost exceeds $2,000, regardless of the unit’s age. Often these repairs involve a failed, out-of-warranty compressor, non-compliant freon (R22) leak, or an unrepairable coil leak. You’re better off investing in a new unit.
   
   
2. If you’ve been told you’ll need a new unit soon due to performance (not age) but you’re waiting … do it NOW before prices increase again and while there’s availability. 
   In the last two years, AC/heater manufacturers have increased prices by a whopping 30%! And prices keep going up due to parts and equipment shortages, which are expected to be even worse next year. Just don’t be fooled into thinking you need to replace your unit because “it’s old.” We have customers with 20-year old units working just fine.
